In the 50's, in Paris, the neighbors Rodolfo and Mimi meet each other when Mimi's candle blows out in a cold and dark night. They immediately fall in love for each other, in times of financial difficulties in the post-war. Standout Aspects

Direction

Luhrmann's early maximalism in miniature form.

Production

1950s Paris sets on a TV movie budget—miracle.

Acting

Cheryl Barker's Mimì will destroy you gently.

Best for:Date Night: If your date cries at operas, marry them.·Solo: Ugly-cry alone with wine and dramatic lighting.·Theater: Big screen Puccini hits different.
Heads up:Emotional: It's La Bohème. Everyone dies. You know this.·Triggers: TB/illness depicted without euphemism.

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

Luhrmann made this for Australian Opera at 31, two years before Romeo + Juliet. The red curtain trilogy started here.

Cultural

This production relocated Puccini's 1830s bohemians to 1950s Paris, making the post-war poverty and looming Cold War anxiety hit harder.
