Libido (1973)

Overview

Drama

Scripted by four of Australia’s greatest authors (David Williamson, Thomas Keneally, Hal Porter and Craig McGregor), this quartet of carnal desires explores adultery and jealous fantasies, the end of innocence, the moral and spiritual conflicts of a priest and a nun in love. The stories define the exploration of women and the cultural upheaval of the early 70s.

Standout Aspects

Writing

Four literary giants competing to out-psychosexual each other.

Production

Four directors, four visions, one gloriously messy anthology.

Best for:Solo: Late night with wine and your pretentious film student hat on.·Date Night: Only if you're ready to discuss YOUR 'erotic drive' afterward.
Heads up:Sexual Content: Nuns, priests, and affairs—Catholic guilt in full erotic bloom.·Disturbing: Child segment deals with innocence lost—handled with 70s bluntness.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

This dropped right after Australia's 'R' rating was introduced, making it a test case for how far local cinema could push adult content.

Trivia

Fred Schepisi's segment 'The Priest' was expanded into his feature 'The Devil's Playground' two years later—he clearly wasn't done with Catholic repression.
