John Wayne's final Western with Howard Hawks — and somehow the plot makes less sense than the Civil War itself.

Standout Aspects

Direction

Hawks' last film — he's basically on autopilot but it's CHARMING autopilot.

Acting

Jack Elam's unhinged energy steals every scene he's in.

Practical Effects

That train heist opening? Old Hollywood craft, no CGI nonsense.

Best for:Rewatch: When you've memorized Rio Bravo and need more Hawks comfort.·Friends: Drinking game: every time Wayne calls someone 'pilgrim' or similar.·Background: Perfect for folding laundry while pretending to pay attention.
Heads up:Violence: Standard 1970 Western violence — bloodless but bodies drop.·Triggers: Casual period-appropriate racism and sexism, unfortunately.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

This was Hawks and Wayne's fifth and final collaboration, completing an unofficial trilogy that started with Rio Bravo and El Dorado. They were basically remaking the same movie hoping no one would notice.

Insight

Hawks cast Jorge Rivero after seeing him in Mexican films, but Rivero's limited English meant most of his dialogue was dubbed — which explains why Cordona's romantic chemistry with Shasta feels like two people in different zip codes.
