Blondie: One Way or Another (2006)

gritty glamBowery decaydisco-punk chaos

Overview

DocumentaryMusic

A documentary about New York band Blondie, from their early beginnings in Bowery clubs like CBGBs alongside other up and coming bands like The Ramones, Patti Smith & Talking Heads. The documentary tracks their years of international success, through their internal problems and decline and then to their recovery and re-establishment leading to their being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 - an event that wasn't without its problems. Lots of interviews with band members, past and present, and their friends and contemporaries. Lots of clips of them performing through the years.

Standout Aspects

Production

Incredible archival CBGB footage that smells like stale beer.

Acting

Debbie Harry's interviewed deflections are masterclass in controlled chaos.

Best for:Solo: Headphones on, walking through your own city like you own it.·Rewatch: Catch new details in the band's passive-aggressive interview glances.
Heads up:Drug Use: Frank discussions of heroin addiction and recovery.

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

Director Matt O'Casey also helmed docs on The Bee Gees and Duran Duran, making him the unofficial chronicler of messy band dynamics.

Cultural

Blondie's 1981 'Rapture' was the first #1 US single with rap vocals, yet the documentary barely explores their complicated relationship with hip-hop's appropriation.
