Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
This was Olivia Hussey's first film role; she later played Juliet in Zeffirelli's 1968 Romeo and Juliet. Delmer Daves literally discovered THE Juliet playing a bitter child.
The film captures a specific post-war fantasy: British middle-class women escaping to Italy for passion, while their children represent the suffocating respectability they fled. The villa itself is the real fantasy object.
