Highly respected director in Peter Hall, and scripted by two leading writers, including Edna O'Brien, plus you have the intense screen presence of Rod Steiger; that should be enough to attract any serious lover of drama.

Terrific and underrated film. The leading trio of Steiger, Bloom, and Geeson are superb, the script is literate, the direction assured, and the soundtrack memorable. A real gem.

It's Judy Geeson's film, it comes alive whenever she's on screen. Almost impossible to find in its original version.
