Separation concerns the inner life of a woman during a period of breakdown – marital, and possibly mental. Her past and (possible?) future are revealed through a fragmented but brilliantly achieved and often humorous narrative, in which dreams and desires are as real as the ‘swinging’ London (complete with Procul Harum music and Mark Boyle light show) of the film’s setting.
Direction
Bond's fragmented narrative that refuses easy answers.
Cinematography
Mark Boyle's liquid light show melting across Jane's face.
Score
Procol Harum's 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' as mental soundtrack.

Director
Jack Bond
Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Jane Arden wrote the screenplay and essentially played a version of herself, blurring autobiography and performance.
This rare female-directed entry in British avant-garde cinema was largely lost for decades before restoration.
