Practically Yours (1944)

screwball chaosrapid-fire bantermistaken identity madness

Overview

ComedyRomance

In this screwball comedy a WW2 US pilot bombs a Japanese aircraft carrier, is assumed to be dead, and then is misquoted in the press as fondly remembering his days back home walking his dog Piggy. Instead of his dog Piggy he is thought to be in love with Peggy, a girl he worked with. The usual farce ensues after he returns home alive and tries to play along with the mistake to save embarrassment for all.

Standout Aspects

Acting

Colbert and MacMurray's chemistry crackles through every ridiculous lie.

Writing

Dialogue so sharp you'll need to pause to catch the jokes.

Best for:Date Night: Vintage charm that feels surprisingly modern in its absurdity.·Solo: 90 minutes of pure escapist joy when you need a palate cleanser.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

This was the fourth and final pairing of Colbert and MacMurray, who had become Paramount's reliable romantic comedy duo throughout the 1930s and 40s.

Cultural

Director Mitchell Leisen started as a costume designer, which explains the impeccable visual polish even in dialogue-heavy scenes — every frame looks expensive.
