The Cloudhopper (1925)

silent chaosstuntman sufferingvintage adrenaline

Overview

Comedy

The plot of this film really isn't that important. Instead, the sight gags and chase scenes are paramount--with some of the most impressive chase footage you'll ever see. All the near-misses with the speeding train were amazing and the scene where the car gets smashed by the truck are absolutely priceless.

Standout Aspects

Stunts

Train near-misses that would give modern safety coordinators nightmares.

Practical Effects

Real car vs truck destruction—no CGI, just glorious carnage.

Best for:Solo: Quick hit of pure silent-era chaos when you need a laugh.·Friends: Pre-game watch before a night out—gets everyone hyped.
Heads up:Disturbing: Some gags involve Blackface—unfortunately typical of the era.

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

Larry Semon was known for spending lavishly on destruction—he once reportedly spent $100,000 on a single short, bankrupting himself.

Cultural

This three-director credit is rare even for the era—Semon's perfectionism and overspending likely required backup.
