This film is actually a remake of a 1977 Chicago stage play by the Organic Theater Company, where Dennis Franz originated the role of Zig.
The original 'Bleacher Bums' helped establish the 'Chicago style' of ensemble comedy that would later influence shows like ER and The Bear. Saul Rubinek, who directed this version, played a Bleacher Bum in the original stage production.
