Shot months before Macau's 1999 handover to China, the film captures a colonial twilight that no longer exists. Yonfan specifically chose locations scheduled for demolition.
Sylvia Chang and Shingo Tsurumi couldn't share a language—she spoke Mandarin and English, he Japanese. Their scenes were choreographed like silent film, with Yonfan translating emotion by emotion.
