Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Britney Spears' real-life mother Lynne wrote the novel this was loosely based on, making this essentially expensive family therapy. Spears reportedly did her own singing live on set, which explains the raw vocal quality in the karaoke scene.
This film arrived at peak Britney mania months before her 2002 breakdown, making Lucy's mother-daughter estrangement plot eerily prophetic. The movie's commercial failure helped kill the pop-star-vehicle genre until A Star Is Born revived it sixteen years later.
