This was shot in Edison's Black Maria studio, the first film studio ever built — essentially a tar-paper shack on a rotating base to catch sunlight.
Before this, films showed actual events. These guys pretending to work while sneaking drinks basically invented narrative fiction and the 'boss makes a dollar, I make a dime' ethos simultaneously.
