Part of the reason why it was so believable is because many of these actors really did serve in WWII: Marvin, 4th Marine Division as a sniper in the Pacific Theater; Bronson, U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943 aerial gunner on a B-29 in the Pacific; Borgnine, destroyer/minesweeper USS Lamberton, and the Atlantic Coast on an antisubmarine warfare ship, the USS Sylph; Ryan, USMC drill instructor from January 1944 to November 1945 at Camp Pendleton; Savalas, US Army Company C, 12th Medical Training Battalion, 4th Medical Training Regiment.

This movie is very under-rated in terms of how it was made. All these years later, it stands up as one of the best movies ever for brilliant editing, script, characterization, cinematography, etc.--- all the subtle details that get overlooked. Every scene has great energy and life, and is linked to the next with expert editing. All the characters interact together with a wonderful sense of humour, drama, and realism. I've seen it many times and am always impressed by what a truly wonderful piece of movie-making it is.
