Overview

Documentary

In an effort to confront her family's dark past a punk-chick from California traces her father's roots back to pre-war Berlin. Her journey takes her to Houston, Paris, Berlin, Prague and Theresientadt. During this voyage she discovers not only how she and her whole family were effected by Hitler's Final Solution but also that her family is larger than anyone imagined. She is finally able to leave a tribute to her family on the streets of Berlin and watch while her father is welcomed back to the city by the Mayor of Berlin.

Standout Aspects

Direction

Nigel Dick lets silences scream louder than any punk track.

Production

DIY punk ethos meets devastating archival footage.

Best for:Solo: You'll need to ugly-cry alone, trust me.·Rewatch: Second viewing hits different once you know the family tree.
Heads up:Emotional: Theresienstadt footage and survivor testimonies — not easy viewing.·Triggers: Holocaust imagery and discussions of family annihilation.
