After seeing the film for the first time, Peck recognized what a great film it is.

There's nothing typical or propagandistic about TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH. Made after WWII, it's one of the greatest war films ever made, dealing with the psychological effects of combat. The film is recognized by those who actually served our country as being one of the most authentic films about air warfare to come out of Hollywood.

The Savage character was awesome. He broke Army regs violated direct orders, abused the men under his command, got his command shot to pieces and cracked up in the end when required to lead a routine mission. The mission was saved by the man who Savage thought to be a coward.
