Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Tarkovsky filmed near a flooded chemical plant in Estonia. Several crew members, including Tarkovsky himself, later died of cancer linked to location exposure. The film literally killed people.
The Strugatsky brothers' novel 'Roadside Picnic' was Soviet samizdat sci-fi; Tarkovsky stripped the aliens and focused on Russian Orthodox spiritual crisis. Same Zone, entirely different pilgrimage.
