Ishihara supposedly storyboarded Kobayashi's confrontation with Kamui first, then built the entire film backwards from that scene. The 2017 TV director returning for this 2025 film was considered unlikely until KyoAni's tragic 2019 arson—this became a statement about rebuilding family.
