A calculator with square roots causes absolute chaos in 1981 Dublin. Math has never been this petty.

Miscalculation (2014)

retro Irish chaospetty intellectual warfareabsurdist workplace comedy

Overview

Comedy

Nuala Ni Bhraonáin, electronics whiz, is a stylish woman about town in Dublin of 1981. She's invented the 'Reilly 9000', the world's first calculator with a square root function. Donnchadh is her flatmate and an egomaniacal Gaeilgóir poet with an unfortunate penchant for plagiarism -- and Rita, one of Nuala's workmates, makes the mistake of getting between Donnchadh and the top prize in Slógadh.

Standout Aspects

Writing

Dialogue so sharp you'll need stitches. The plagiarism burns are *chef's kiss*.

Production

1981 Dublin recreated with suspiciously specific rage against Slógadh culture.

Acting

Ruth McGill's side-eye could power the Reilly 9000 itself.

Best for:Solo: Quick hit of perfectly calibrated spite before your actual plans.·Friends: Watch before a night out—guaranteed argument about who's the Donnchadh.·Rewatch: Catch every passive-aggressive Gaeilge flex you missed.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

Slógadh was a real Irish cultural competition where Irish-language performances vied for prestige; the film savagely satirizes its ego-driven politics.

Trivia

The Reilly 9000 is fictional—no Irish calculator had square roots in 1981, making Nuala's invention both historically impossible and narratively perfect.
