Rooftops (1989)

So 80s it hurtsCult curiositySincere absurdity

Overview

ActionCrime

T, as most of his friends, lives in a self-constructed 'house', built on top of an old building in the city. Their one passion is 'combat'. Combat is a dance/streetfight during which the contestants try to push each other out of the arena, while not allowed to actually touch each other. When drugdealers move into the neighbourhood and kill T's best friend he embarks on a mission to eradicate the drug-presence in the neigbourhood. His friends are reluctant to help though, knowing what happened to T's friend when he crossed them.

Standout Aspects

Direction

Robert Wise's 40-year career ends with... this. Respect the chaos.

Production

Genuine NYC rooftop sets before CGI killed practical magic.

Best for:Streaming: When you need to witness a legendary director's unhinged swan song.·Friends: Irony-forward group viewing with snacks and disbelief.·Solo: Curiosity killed the cat, satisfaction brought it back.
Heads up:Violence: Drug-related gun violence and a central character death.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

This was Robert Wise's final film—the man who edited Citizen Kane and directed The Sound of Music ended his career with breakdance-fighting.

Cultural

The 'combat' sport was invented for the film, blending capoeira's no-touch rules with 80s dance culture—pure speculative fiction dressed as urban realism.
