Terror 2000 (1993)

chaotic satireunhinged provocation90s eurotrash

Overview

ComedyHorror

Germany, right after the re-unification. The people are out of control, blind hatred towards immigrants is common sense. In this time, a social-worker, with the mission to bring a Polish family to their destination (an immigration camp in a little provincial town called Rassau), gets kidnapped just as the family. Chief inspector Koern and his girl-friend start to investigate in this matter in Rassau, exploring a world of obsessive sex, mislead lust and an over-whelming irrational love to the German nation, infiltrating anyone's mind. Rascism doesn't start with shaved hair and boots but rather in the middle of society itself...

Standout Aspects

Direction

Schlingensief's kamikaze satirical assault on reunification Germany.

Acting

Udo Kier's unhinged Jablo, a performance from another dimension.

Production

Zero-budget chaos that weaponizes its own ugliness.

Best for:Solo: Nobody else will know what you just witnessed.·Rewatch: Required for processing what Schlingensief threw at you.
Heads up:Disturbing: Unflinching depictions of xenophobic violence and sexual coercion.·Triggers: Nazi imagery used deliberately to provoke and disgust.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

Released months after neo-Nazi arsons killed Turkish immigrants in Mölln and Solingen; Schlingensief called it 'immediate cinema' responding to live atrocities.

Memorable

The film's title references Tod Browning's Freaks but its real lineage is Godard's Week End—same road-trip-to-nowhere nihilism, same collapsing Europe.
