Foreign Directors on Directing (2008)

insider exposéfilm school goldradical honesty

Overview

Documentary

Non-US directors speak about the idiosyncrasies of filmmaking in their respective countries. Because of the difficulty of financing, very few American film directors establish a body of work. For American women directors, the problem is two-fold. But in Europe, Canada, and some countries of South America, filmmaking is often government subsidized, making it possible for filmmakers to become prolific in their craft.

Direction

Acker lets her subjects breathe — no talking heads, just truth.

Writing

The structure builds a devastating case without preaching.

Production

Raw footage that feels like stolen conversations.

Best for:Solo: Absorb every bitter truth about who gets to make art.·Streaming: Pause to scream at the screen about Hollywood's failures.·Rewatch: Return when you need rage-fuel for your own creative block.
Heads up:Triggers: Frank discussion of sexism and industry abuse.
