Juan and his urban family live in the Mexican countryside, where they enjoy and suffer a world apart. And nobody knows if these two worlds are complimentary or if they strive to eliminate one another.
Direction
Reygadas shoots his own family naked and fighting. Uncomfortably intimate.
Cinematography
Pinhole-edge distortion makes every frame feel like a memory betraying you.
Sound
Brahms, dogs, wind, sex, silence — the soundscape is the narrative.

Director
Carlos Reygadas
Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
Reygadas won Best Director at Cannes 2012 despite walkouts during the explicit sauna orgy sequence. The jury, led by Nanni Moretti, specifically cited his 'radical honesty.'
The title references Geneva's motto after Protestant Reformation, but Reygadas — lapsed Catholic, wealthy Mexican elite — uses it ironically: his light reveals only more darkness, more shame.
