In 1930s fascist Italy, adolescent Luca just lost his mother. His father, a callous businessman, sends him to be taken care of by British expatriate Mary Wallace. Standout Aspects

Acting

Four acting legends trading barbs like Olympic sport.

Production

Florence locations so lush you'll cry about your apartment.

Costume

Elsa's wardrobe alone deserves its own spin-off film.

Best for:Solo: Sunday afternoon with biscuits and main character energy.·Friends: Your friend group that argues about who'd hide you in wartime.·Rewatch: Catching every side-eye Maggie Smith gives actual history.
Heads up:Emotional: Luca's mother dies in opening; grief threads throughout.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

Zeffirelli based Luca on himself — he was a fatherless boy raised by a group of English expatriate women in Florence during the war. The 'Scorpioni' were real.

Trivia

Cher insisted on doing her own singing for Elsa's cabaret number. She also personally selected every costume, bringing her own jewelry. The diva IS the method.
